It’s interesting to me that every time this subject comes up about the dangers of taking drugs along with supplements, the danger is always inferred on the supplement.

Supplements don’t usually come with a page long list of side effects (including death) but drugs sure do. Wouldn’t it be a lot less dangerous to start with the food based supplement first and if it isn’t effective enough, then try the drug if needed. I’ve seen this about 15 years ago when the FDA was trying to get all nutritional supplements under the control of medical doctors who would have to prescribe them like a drug. One of the many problems with this is that medical doctors only have one semester in their required schooling in nutrition. The fact is that most medical doctors don’t know the first thing about nutrition or nutritional supplements.

I’m not saying that medical doctors are not educated or needed but nutrition is not their expertise, drugs and surgery are. I have personally seen many different heart conditions as well as many other serious health conditions cured through nutritional supplements without the many side effects that drugs have. With that said, causion should be taken especially when using herbal supplements along with drugs. When in doubt ask a health professional who’s expertise is in nutrition.
